Frequently asked questions

What is NPS?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed retirement scheme. You contribute regularly until age 60; the corpus grows with market-linked returns, and at 60 part of it is taken as a lump sum while the rest buys an annuity that pays a monthly pension.

How much of the NPS corpus can I withdraw?

At maturity (age 60) you can withdraw up to 60% of the corpus as a tax-free lump sum. At least 40% must be used to buy an annuity, which provides your monthly pension. This calculator uses that 60/40 split.

How is the monthly pension estimated?

The pension depends on the annuity rate you get when you retire. This tool multiplies the annuity portion by your assumed annuity rate and divides by 12. Actual annuity rates vary by provider and over time.

Are NPS returns guaranteed?

No. NPS invests in equity and debt, so returns are market-linked and not guaranteed. The figures here are estimates based on the rates you enter.
